It is no secret that we are big fans of Sicily, the island in general, but also the wines in particular. One of the winemakers we have really fallen in love with is Francesco Guccione from the Monreale region in Sicily.
Francesco works the land inherited from his family, who themselves instead farmed for the cooperative, so unlike Francesco who makes his own wines. With a lot of soul and passion going into his craft, his holistic approach in the vines and non-interventionalist style in the cellar gives very expressive interpretations of typical Sicilian grapes like Trebbiano, Perricone, Caterratto and Nerelo Mascalese.
In this box we’ve put together three of his beautiful wines, which hopefully will make you fall in love with Francesco’s wines too:
This red wine is made with Nerello Mascalese grapes, which we first tried at the Guccione estate and was open for FOUR DAYS, giving off a delightful bouquet of balsamic strawberries, herbs and spice with a light, fresh aspect we adored.
This white wine is made with 50% Trebbiano and 50% Catarratto grapes, giving off delightful touches of Chamomile, dried herbs, mild toffee and raisin touches with some lovely salinity. Rounded and beautiful.
This white wine is made with Trebbiano grapes, which are taken from both the 2019 and 2020 vintages.
With the fermentation of the 2020 on its indigenous yeasts well under way a slow and steady addition of 2019 is carried out throughout the fermentation. Upon completion the wine is put to rest in stainless steel until it is ready for bottling.
We recently went to visit Francesco and made this little documentary about him, so why not watch it, whilst enjoying his elegant wines:
